About Scaramanga Silk
British electronic music producer and DJ from London. In February 2021, Scaramanga Silk became involved in a highly publicized controversy after listed one of the artist's releases, a 2008 white label promo 12" , as "the most expensive record ever sold on Discogs."
In a separate detailed entry on Discogs Blogs (now Digs), the record-breaking sale price appeared as $41,095 with a further explanation that it "drew attention from collectors shortly after it dropped when it sold on eBay for $654. How that price tag sky-rocketed to over $40,000 remains a mystery. Not much information is listed in the Database; only five Discogs users want it, and three have it. This eye-opening sale is the only time it has passed hands through our Marketplace." (Meanwhile, the Price History page indicates it went for $37,037, or £30,000.) The blog post clearly stated that the transaction took place between two private collectors; thus, Scaramanga Silk personally didn't gain any profit and claimed to have no personal acquaintance with the involved parties.
Various major media outlets publicized the story, including , , The Vinyl Factory, , and Billboard. A few publications, such as , pointed out skepticism that quickly arose in the community, questioning "whether anyone would pay such a high sum for a record most collectors have never heard." The article quoted comments on the record's Discogs release page that suggested "Silk bought the record himself for 'pseudo-promotional purposes.'" The fact that Choose Your Weapon left behind such "heavyweights" as the Canadian pressing of 's Black Album, mint 7" singles by , or 's Japanese promo 2xLP on red vinyl further stirred heated discussions. (All comments on Discogs have been deleted since then.) Other theories claimed the possible involvement of well-known anonymous artists and pranksters, such as or . BBC News wrote that Discogs confirmed the sale was genuine but didn't reveal the identities of either buyer or the seller. Curiously, in the case of 's 301 Jackson St LP, supposedly sold for $18,000 on Discogs Marketplace in 2017 with similar intent to generate publicity and media coverage for an otherwise unknown and unnotable musician, the hoax was quickly exposed by media, including , and . As it turned out, Yeager bought the LP from himself, and Discogs canceled the transaction and even removed the album from the website.
In November 2022, Choose Your Weapon was again sold on the Marketplace for a mere $190, indicating a 99%+ loss in value from December 2020 "record-breaking" deal.
