Ce film se situe entre la période d'or des films de pirateries et autres scénarios d'aventures en mer des Caraïbes de fin des années 30 à moitié des années 60 et celle plus tardive des années 2000.
Le galion qui servit pour le tournage est une réplique du Golden Hinde, vaisseau conduit par le célèbre corsaire britannique Francis Drake, et construit en 1575 à Plymouth.
Le scénario du film se passe en 1718, donc à cette époque les galions n'étaient plus tout à fait les mêmes mais pris dans l'action du scénario, il fallait avoir le coup d’œil d'un expert ou d'un collectionneur pour s'en rendre vraiment compte.
Le film ne connut pas le succès attendu et fit un flop commercial peut être trop décalé par rapport à ce qu'attendaient à cette époque les spectateurs ou amateurs de ce genre de films.
D'ailleurs, la partition de John Addison à la fois joviale, fantaisiste, burlesque par moment, appuie cette thèse. Les grands classiques d'Errol Flynn et Burt Lancaster faisaient partie du passé et celle de Johnny Deep via Walt Disney Pictures loin d'être née.
